Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (the Dutch
national research institute for mathematics and computer science) has a vacancy
for a Tenure-track position in Evolutionary Intelligence. Application deadline:
May 15, 2023.

https://www.cwi.nl/en/jobs/vacancies/990956/

CWI strives to be a diverse and inclusive research institute. To achieve
balanced representation in leadership positions, CWI will prioritize
applications from female researchers (including identifying as).

Description
-----------
The vision of the Evolutionary Intelligence (EI) research group at CWI is to
synergize two key fields in Artificial Intelligence (AI): Evolutionary
Computation and Machine Learning. The prime objective is to fundamentally
advance and innovate Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) by use of (deep) machine
learning algorithms and vice versa. This explicitly includes both the design and
the application of such algorithms.

With this tenure track position, we seek to add to the existing strengths of the
EI group to enable further development of this vision. A key fundamental
research line of the group is the state-of-the-art, multi-award winning,
Gene-pool Optimal Mixing Evolutionary Algorithm (GOMEA) family of algorithms.
More broadly, major research themes of the group are model-based EAs,
multi-objective optimization and learning, inherently eXplainable AI (XAI),
Neural Architecture Search (NAS), medical image analysis, and optimization of
internal radiation treatment (brachytherapy) for cancer.

The EI group collaborates with external parties on many of its research themes.
The EI group is part of a nation-wide network of EA experts, who jointly
initiated the JOint Lectures on Evolutionary Algorithms (JOLEA, see
https://event.cwi.nl/jolea/). The EI group furthermore has many ongoing, and
expanding, collaborations with (university) medical centers (Leiden UMC,
Amsterdam UMC, Utrecht UMC, the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), and the
Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology) as well as industry partners on
tailoring EI algorithms to be used in the clinic. However, as the application
potential of EI algorithms is much broader, applications and collaborations
within other domains are explicitly part of the group vision. Various
connections and plans already exist with industry partners in the domains of
retail, agriculture, logistics, and energy. Candidates are expected to have an
interest in expanding such collaborations in one or more application domain.

CWI is well connected to all universities in The Netherlands. The EI group has
especially strong ties with Delft University of Technology, particularly the
faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS),
offering direct possibilities to collaborate with another top institute in The
Netherlands. In general, CWI's connections to universities make it possible to
contribute to and leverage an even larger collaboration network as well as
partake in educational activities, including the supervision of M.Sc. students
in their final graduation projects. Candidates are expected to have an interest
in undertaking educational activities.

The group currently exists of the group leader (Peter A.N. Bosman), a lead
scientific software developer (Anton Bouter), 2 scientific programmers, and 16
PhD students (of which 8 are hired at CWI). We are looking for highly motivated
candidates to expand the knowledge, successes, and abilities of the EI group in
general, with a keen interest in developing new algorithms and applying them,
together with (industry) partners, to real-world problems. Candidates should
therefore have clearly demonstrable expertise in (a form of) evolutionary
computation, (a form of) machine learning, or both. This especially includes,
but is not limited to, expertise with respect to genetic programming (e.g., for
symbolic learning / XAI), neuro-evolution (e.g., for NAS), and deep learning
(e.g., for medical image analysis). If candidates do not have experience in
both, then they should at least have an identifiable interest in the
complementary expertise (i.e., to support synergies between the two).

Finally, candidates are expected to publish in leading domain-specific journals
and conference proceedings, to have the ambition and ability to obtain funding
for additional research positions, to accordingly recruit and supervise PhD
students and postdocs, and to establish and maintain good relations to
collaborators of the EI group, both in academia and industry.

Requirements
You are a scientist with a PhD degree and expertise in a broadly defined
interpretation of evolutionary computation and/or machine learning, including,
but not limited to genetic programming, genetic algorithms, evolution
strategies, estimation-of-distribution algorithms, evolutionary multi-objective
optimization, explainable AI, deep learning, neuroevolution and other hybrid
forms of evolution and learning. Both early career researchers (i.e., with a PhD
degree and some experience as a postdoctoral researcher) and researchers who are
more senior are invited to apply.

You have proven your ability to make impactful research contributions. You have
developed a research vision that is compatible with the vison of the EI group at
CWI, with clear ideas that you want to explore scientifically. You are keen to
further develop your teaching and funding skills, and to actively participate in
and help develop CWI’s initiatives for the Dutch mathematics and computer
science communities. You communicate well and enjoy developing (inter)national
collaborations. In supervising students and PhD candidates, you are responsive
to their needs.

Attractive working conditions at CWI We provide comfortable facilities, and have
flexible working hours (partly working from home), including benefits, and offer
professional coaching and training and support for e.g. grant-writing. We help
with housing for expat employees, and if accepting this position means your
partner must find another job, we can also be of assistance. CWI is an
internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 27
countries, an informal atmosphere, and short lines of communication. We have an
activity committee that organizes after-work activities and an informal women’s
network.

For more information about CWI, please visit www.cwi.nl or watch our video about
working at CWI.To hear from CWI colleagues about what it is like to work at CWI,

CWI is located at Amsterdam Science Park, a major location of AI research in The
Netherlands, housing the sciences faculty of the University of Amsterdam as well
as several other national and international research labs and institutes.
