Call for Papers: Futuring Outside the Box: New Dynamics in Media, Communication and Sociology
PGR Conference
University of Leicester, 15 June 2023
Extended Deadline for abstracts: 17 March 2023

The Postgraduate Research Community at the School of Media, Communication and Sociology (MCS) at the University of Leicester would like to invite all MCS postgraduate research students and early career researchers to submit abstracts for the MCS PGR Conference 2023.

The theme this year is Futuring Outside the Box: New Dynamics in Media, Communication and Sociology. The conference will be held at the University of Leicester on Thursday 15th June 2023.

One of the keynote speakers is Professor Andrew Chadwick, Professor of Political Communication and Director of the Online Civic Culture Centre in the Department of Communication and Media at Loughborough University. His keynote discussion is titled, “Where Next? Mainstreaming the Future of Communication Research”.

You can choose to submit either:

  * A creative talk: A 15-minute opportunity to showcase your work in any format that you prefer (i.e. poster presentation, photography, poetry, music, art, videos, zines) with 10 minutes peer discussion/Q&A.

  *   A research presentation: A 15-minute slot to discuss your research with 10-minute Q&A.

Note: This conference will be held in person. We encourage in-person presentations but if this is not possible, we have a limited number of spaces to present online.

As part of your submission, you will be asked to provide:

  * A brief biography (no more than 100 words) which gives a brief overview of yourself, your research interests, and the organisation you study/work at.

  * For those presenting a research presentation, you are required to submit an abstract with title and keywords. For those presenting a creative talk, you are required to submit a brief description of the intended content (no more than 250 words).

Theme: Futuring Outside the Box: New Dynamics in Media, Communication and Sociology

As researchers we have had a lot to process, reflect and build upon over the last couple of years, from a global pandemic to the ever-fluctuating political landscape. Not only have recent events changed the focus and attention within our fields of study, but they have allowed us to adapt and transform how we conduct our research with the use of new innovative methods and perspectives. As media, communication, and sociology researchers we have a duty to critically reflect upon the changing and future dynamics of our research, as well as the futures we personally strive for.

This conference seeks to provide a space to reflect upon future dynamics in MCS, including the topics we research, the methods we use, and the innovative perspectives we encounter. We aim to form a collective space to explore how our discipline will change and adapt for the future, and how we as MCS researchers can push conventional boundaries within our field and support/address a variety of ideas and voices.

We also want this conference to be an opportunity to think beyond common academic formats and structures. We encourage creative presentations in order to create an inclusive space for the celebration of creative, critical, and unconventional approaches in media, communication and sociology research.

Note: the theme has been kept broad to include a variety of topics.

How to submit:

  * Please send over your biography and abstract/brief description via this form below:
https://forms.gle/e76VMwWeryqeTPYY7

Important dates and guidelines:

  * Extended Deadline for biography and abstract/brief description submission: Friday 17th March 2023.
  * Notification of accepted abstracts: Friday 7th April 2023.
  * The conference has no registration fees. Tea/coffee will be provided.
  * Registration for non-presenter attendees will be open from Wednesday 1st February 2023 and will close at the end of April 2023.

Please contact us at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you at the MCS PGR conference 2023!

Best wishes,

MCS PGR Conference Committee 2023, University of Leicester
