SAD NEWS: Wolfgang Röllig (1932-2023)
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Prof. em. Dr. Wolfgang Röllig’s (06.02.1932 - 22.02.2023). We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends. As an accomplished scholar in both archaeological and philological realms, as a philanthropist in the literal sense, as a talented and dedicated teacher of Semitic languages, and as a warm and open individual, he is no longer with us.
May he be remembered for the bright, inspiring personality he was throughout his life. Innumerable obituaries will surely highlight his academic achievements. At this moment, we sit quietly and reflect on the tremendous energy he devoted to expanding the horizons of knowledge. May his memory be a blessing.
«Wollst endlich sonder Grämen
Aus dieser Welt uns nehmen
Durch einen sanften Tod!
Und, wenn du uns genommen,
Laß uns in Himmel kommen,
Du unser Herr und unser Gott!»
(Matthias Claudius, Abendlied)
