The Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, Harvard University, is seeking to fill the newly-created position of Deputy Director. CHSI, established in 1948, currently holds more than 20,000 objects dating from about 1400 to present day, making it one of the three largest university collections of its kind in the world. Originally associated with the Harvard Library system, the collection was placed under the stewardship of the Department of the History of Science in 1987. The collection represents a broad range of scientific disciplines, from biology and chemistry, physics, astronomy, and psychology, and hosts both a permanent display and a changing set of major exhibits driven by the research and teaching interests of Departmental faculty, postdocs, graduate students and visitors. Among the many exhibits we have put on over the last years are ones on the cultural and technical history of radio, the history and interpretation of the Rorschach and projective testing, and the Turing Test and its implications (https://chsi.harvard.edu/).
The Deputy Director will play a key role in leading all collections activities, operations, administration, and staff. In close partnership with the Faculty Director (Peter Galison), Faculty Associate Director (Hannah Marcus), the Chair of the History of Science Department (Elizabeth Lunbeck) and CHSI staff, the Deputy Director will establish priorities for use of the collection for teaching and research and allocate resources to support collections priorities. Applicants can learn more about the scope of the position and submit an application here.
We are looking for someone excited to work with the Faculty Director and Departmental faculty as well as with the wider history of science and university community, and to lead a dedicated team that includes a senior curator and curatorial/collections staff. We seek someone with at least eight years of museum management experience and at minimum an MA degree (PhD desirable). We would be happy to receive expressions of interest in the position as well as nominations of individuals you recommend we consider. Please feel free to reach out to any of us with any questions about the position.
