Dear colleagues,
I would like to alert a PhD position that is opening in the group of structural geology at the University of Bologna, Italy.
The project will focus on the topic of fluid-deformation interactions in subduction zones and their feedback with seismicity. The project will involve fieldwork in different orogens and the multiscale study of rock samples subducted to different pressure and temperature conditions, with the aim of identifying and characterizing the main fluid percolation structures. Afterward, the deformation mechanisms responsible for the development of these structures will be characterized.
PhD candidates must apply following the details and requirements of the call that will shortly be available online (opening around the 20th of April and closing by the 19th of May) at https://www.unibo.it/en/teaching/phd/2022-2023/earth-life-and-environmental-sciences
The starting day will be 1st of November 2023.
Please, feel free to forward this email to potential candidates and contact me for any additional information.
Additional information can be found below.
With my best regards,
Francesco

Call for a fully funded three year PhD position in the group of structural geology at the University of Bologna, Italy
PhD title: Structural characterization of fluid pathways in subduction
The project will focus on the topic of fluid-deformation interactions in subduction zones and their feedback with seismicity.
The project will involve fieldwork in different orogens (including the Alps and the Apennines) and the multiscale study of rock samples subducted to different pressure and temperature conditions, with the aim of identifying and characterizing the main fluid percolation structures. Afterward, the deformation mechanisms responsible for the development of these structures will be characterized.
Expected results will include the characterization of metamorphic-deformation processes allowing fluid migration in subduction zone, fluid composition and origin, and feedback with seismicity.
Numerous analytical techniques will be used during the project, including optical microscopy, SEM-EBSD, Raman spectroscopy, and cathodoluminescence, collaborating with both members of the research team and international collaborators.
Presentation of the results at national and international scientific conferences is planned. The candidate is expected to publish the PhD results in international scientific journals.
The project will be hosted at the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences of the University of Bologna, Italy https://bigea.unibo.it/en/index.html
PhD candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in Earth Sciences (or must obtain the degree no later than the enrolment, and before the PhD programme’s start date) and competences in structural and metamorphic geology. PhD candidates must apply following the details of the call that will shortly be available online (opening around the 20th of April and closing by the 19th of May) at https://www.unibo.it/en/teaching/phd/2022-2023/earth-life-and-environmental-sciences
The starting day will be 1st of November 2023.

Thank you,
Francesco
