Cool picture, but very strange. I don't think I have ever heard of a pelagic octopod hitting a jig. Probably means that they catch and eat normal ceph food (e.g., crustaceans, maybe fishes) in addition to jellyfish.

Hi Unai, Mike, Jesse et al.,
Last march I was contacted because coastal squid anglers were getting some gelatinous octopus inside a port in Asturias, near the place Unai was referring to. It turned out to be Haliphron as well. They bit the jigs (see attached photo) and they were catching them for two weeks. They told me they had never catched them before. I put all my tele-begging mechanisms at work, but sadly I didn't get any samples.

We reported on a similar encounter a couple years ago from the NE Atlantic, off Terceira Island in the Azores. Ours was a male of the species recorded by SCUBA divers attached to the bell of a jelly (Pelagia noctiluca). Open-access link:
