The counting of the total number of daily rings (when evidenced) formed after hatching in otoliths, statoliths, beaks etc relies on a proper identification of the first ring often called the hatch ring. In cod larvae otoliths this ring is distinctly darker than any prehatch rings and the following nearest rings (see my Research Gate paper Fisheries Research 90 (2008) 9–16 2.2. (Otolith preparations and age analyses.)
My questions to those interested are:
1. Do you know any papers dealing with the evidence for hatch ring (statoliths, beaks, etc) in early cephalopod larvae and pre-hatch rings in embryos close to hatching?
2. Do you have any early cephalopod larvae and embryos close to hatching preserved in ethanol that I could analyse ? Perhaps from hatching experiments using a 12 h dark and12 light-cycle?
This microdissection is demanding especially since the statoliths are extremely small and they cannot be stained when preserved in ethanol (as far as I know). But I would like to give it try.
Later I would like to discuss the presence of sub- daily rings and problems with early rings in beak counts (if there is and interest).
