Dear Colleagues
African Dance Disability Network (ADDN) 2023 – Online meetings
We want to introduce you to our new UKRI – AHRC funded research network project entitled Encountering disability through contemporary dance in Africa. And invite you as a specialist in this area as an academic, artist and/or educator to join us. The network is free and open to all and envisioned to be a space of community, sharing and support.
Our aims are to:
* develop sustainable working relationships with persons working in this area across borders and dance sectors,
*create fora to share knowledge, experience and best practice (via readings and through our own experiences as artists, teachers, researchers, companies and organizations vested in disability dance work,
*identify issues and challenges faced by disabled people in various socio-cultural contexts and discuss ways to address them through dance,
*collectively map challenges and innovations in integrated dance praxis, primarily in Africa, but in dialogue with global contexts,
share opportunities such as calls for funding, applications for festivals, artistic residencies, etc., while also exploring new possibilities for collaborations,
*develop a purpose-built website as a hub for available information that includes all of the above and outputs from the project that you would like to share in this space.
This will strengthen and extend the informal network we first established in 2021 and 2022 prior to this project with researchers and practitioners.
We plan to meet via Zoom every two months to focus on key questions arising from your and our work as practitioners, educators, researchers, etc. We will do a Meet & Greet in our first session, and discuss how we set agendas going forward, including the option for anyone in the network to lead a session on a specific topic, reading, new work, etc.
