Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to our session on the socio-environmental aspects of mineral exploration in the Arctic entitled "Optimizing geological, environmental, and social criteria for exploration in the Arctic" at the GAC-MAC conference 2023 on 24-27 May 2023 in Sudbury.
For the session description and abstract submission link see: https://event.fourwaves.com/Sudbury2023/pages
Abstract submission deadline: 2nd March 2023.
The goal of the session is to consider resources in the Arctic, particularly those that host the critical metals needed for the energy transition and climate change mitigation, from geological, environmental and societal perspectives. Future mining and exploration must meet the highest standards of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, particularly in the context of potentially impacted Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Geological factors, such as deposit type and setting, size, grade, and geometry, and mining and processing methods correlate to varying degrees with ESG challenges and risks for development and operation. Climate, climate change and the regional environment may also magnify or mitigate ESG risks depending on the mineral system and deposit type.
As part of this thought process we are also reaching out to Indigenous people who work in or interact with the mining and exploration industry, or people who work with communities in the Arctic. If you are interested in being part of our discussions on the future of mining in the Arctic then please don’t hesitate to get in touch for an informal conversation. Additionally, we will soon be contacting invited speakers and would love to hear from you if you think that you could speak about a specific case study or community in the Arctic.
The session will examine the relationship between mineral systems, specific deposit types, and the amenability of responsible mining in the Arctic. The Arctic is increasingly vulnerable to changing global climate, but also has a long history of mining and considerable potential for the discovery of new resources hosting critical metals. This raises important questions such as: 1) how do we determine cumulative impact-benefit and potential “value” for Indigenous and other communities when evaluating a mineral prospect in the Arctic?; 2) how do we balance the requirements of communities with sustainable prosperity goals as part of land-use planning in the Arctic?; and, 3) how do we use and adjust mineral system and mineral deposit models to support mineral exploration and development in the Arctic?
We are inviting abstract submissions to the session. We encourage general geoscience, economic geology, mineral and prospectivity assessment, environment and policy, and Indigenous perspectives.
