Hello CCPEM,

I am trying to come up with a good computer configuration to fit the following requirements, in order of importance:

- sufficiently silent to be in a shared office space

- decent performance for running interactive model building and refinement in ISOLDE

- able to run GPU-accelerated "smaller tools" (as in, those that don’t require the whole set of raw movies, for example deepEMhancer); this basically sets a strict requirement for an Nvidia card, since pretty much everything uses CUDA

It is not meant to be a heavy duty workstation, this part of the processing will be done on a cluster.

The university where I work has a catalogue of ready-made configurations, and we cannot buy from elsewhere. I found two configurations that seem well suited, but I would like to run them past the collective wisdom of this list, in case there is a catch I didn’t notice.

Configuration 1:

MSI Creator P50 11TC

Intel Core i7 11700 11th gen, 8 cores, 2.5 - 4.9 GHz, 16 MB cache

32 GB DDR4 SDRAM 3200 MHz

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB

SSD M2 1 TB

HDD 1 TB

2-year warranty

Configuration 2:

HP Z2 G9 Mini

Intel Core i7 12700K 12th gen, 12 cores, 3.6 - 5.0 GHz, 25 MB cache

32 GB DDR5 SDRAM 4800 MHz

Nvidia RTX A2000 12 GB

SSD M2 1 TB

3-year warranty

The rest of the specs are comparable or even identical. Configuration 2 is more expensive than Configuration 1 by 580€.

I could find online a video showing the noise level of Configuration 2 under full load (not sure it included the GPU though), and it is pretty silent (max 43 dB). I could not find any such demo for Configuration 1. Is there any reason it could be louder?

Finally, I know all cryoEM programs work fine on "gamer" cards like the RTX 3060. Is there any compelling reason to pay 580€ more for 1 TB less storage space and one less year of warranty, and get the RTX A2000 "professional" card?

Thank you in advance for any comment!

Cheers,

Guillaume
