Dear all
For those with an interest in governance and policy for sustainable transport/ active travel, we have recently published the following report (with video) based on research focusing on Old Oak and Park Royal in West London:
https://blog.westminster.ac.uk/ata/projects/opdcproject
The research notes that the regeneration of the OPDC area – which spans Ealing, Brent and Hammersmith & Fulham - is a vital opportunity for achieving an improved walking and cycling environment, but the current environment is poor and achieving improvements involves several challenges, including a lack of early funding and fragmented control of planning and highways across OPDC and the three boroughs.
Key recommendations include:
• London-wide mandates of support for cross-borough cycle lanes - such as Cycle Future route 23, the proposed cross-London cycle route going through the OPDC area into central London – should be sought based on agreed principles so that the principles themselves do not have to be renegotiated if opposition arises later on.
• More funding for active travel infrastructure from central government or London agencies is needed to address OPDC’s estimated funding shortfall of £153 million, including for new and improved pedestrian, cycling and green infrastructure along major roads.
• Enhanced community engagement is needed to ensure that local stakeholders are involved with scheme design, including through informal pre-consultation discussions and so that the community understands key details that could be misinterpreted, such as design details or the use of temporary and experimental measures.
This is a project I have worked on with Dr Jan Gerhards and Prof. Rachel Aldred (Active Travel Academy, University of Westminster)
