Data literacy and the role of the visualization designer (a seminar from VizExperts)

2pm on Wednesday, 2 November 2022

Please join us for the November Turing Institute VizTIG online seminar, by Dr Senaka Fernando, who is the managing director of Bars and Lines Limited and a researcher at the Imperial College Business School. Based on the experience from the data observatory at Imperial College London, Senaka will discuss some of the key aspects of an effective data visualisation such as simplicity, interactivity, accuracy and clarity in addition to aesthetics and visual appeal.

The seminar will be on Zoom and please register at https://turing-uk.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAtcOysqjsvE9SjldzeRC6eYhM8r-EAT1ag

Abstract:
As we evolve as a society, data literacy is becoming increasingly important as much as literacy in general. However, the equivalent of vocabulary in data is very limited, leaving enough room for a designer’s intentions to be misunderstood by a viewer. Designing an effective data visualisation, therefore, is far more complicated than preparing an effective speech. This talk explores the role of the visualisation designer and its importance for data comprehension in society and industry.

Based on experience from various data visualisations that were presented and studied within the data observatory at Imperial College London, Senaka highlights some of the key aspects of an effective data visualisation such as simplicity, interactivity, accuracy and clarity in addition to aesthetics and visual appeal.

Bio:
Senaka Fernando is the managing director of Bars and Lines Limited and a casual academic researcher at the Imperial College Business School. Prior to this, Senaka was an academic researcher at the Data Science Institute of Imperial College London having completed his PhD in computing, at the institute. He focuses on scalable rendering of data visualisations and educates people on how to design effective data visualisations. And, he has 12+ years of industry experience working as the head of digital transformation at WSO2 UK Limited. Senaka also manages VizExperts, which started off as a combination of academics at Imperial College London and employees of Bars and Lines Limited — based on work Senaka and others did at Imperial.
