I forwarded this question to David Alan Richards. He is sceptical:
I have never read of any auction of his effects at Bateman's after his death. His personal effects left in Vermont might have included this, but while books from the house have surfaced (I have one or two), I don't think the folks which bought the house had a tag sale thereafter, and with Kipling leaving in haste and perhaps disgrace after the lawsuit with Beatty, that seems unlikely in any event.
I have researched at the Grolier Club, which has the largest such collection in this country, every UK and US auction catalogue since the late featured "alia" appeared in June 1944 at the Argus Book Shop in Chicago, lots 470-401, and these included, according to my notes, "Kipling's antique Samarkand rug (given to Mrs. Hill in Beaver, PA), his gold silk cummerbund, his cloisonne vase purchased in Tokyo, and one of his muslin curtains." The rug and cummerbund are now in the Carpenter Collection in the Library of Congress. Nary a sight of an inkwell anywhere...
Still, it's a really nice antique ink-stand.

Hello,
I am a researcher of the Company and colonial history of western India, and what drew me to Kipling was his connection to his birthplace (and mine) - Bombay.
I came across this interesting artefact a couple of years ago, an inkwell desk-stand that might have belonged to Rudyard Kipling himself, and I was wondering if there might be any truth to the details?:

Considering that Bateman's is where all his writing implements at the time of his death are kept (in situ, I gather), I wonder if there is any mention / record of what this item could be.
I look forward to hearing back on any information that any of the well informed members on this forum might have.
Thanking you,
Mrinal
