Pakistan is home to 220 million people, almost all of whom are Muslim. It is also home to one of the largest Shia populations in the world, as an estimated 20 percent of Muslims, there are Shia, a sub-sect of Islam. But despite its large size, the Shia population in Pakistan remains one of the country's primary victims of violence. As a result of a confluence of circumstances shaped by current and past internal and international political processes, anti-Shia violence and terrorization by violent extremists are rapidly becoming the social norm. However, it has been claimed that mainstream media in Pakistan have never taken the issue of violence against Shias seriously and that this lack of reporting makes it impossible to determine exactly how many Shias have been killed as a result of faith-based violence in Pakistan. Why is anti-Shia violence being under-reported or misreported? As part of my research, I am speaking with journalists, activists, and members of the Shia community to better understand the factors that affect reporting.
