Subject: QAA Subject Benchmark Review - EOI for Advisory Groups
Hi everyone,
The QAA has now launched its call for expressions of interest to join the Advisory Groups for QAA Subject Benchmark Statement reviews, including for the Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies Subject Benchmark Statement.
Full details on their website:
https://www.qaa.ac.uk/quality-code/subject-benchmark-statements/expressions-of-interest-to-join-advisory-groups-for-qaa-subject-benchmark-statements
This follows the previous call for Chair and Deputy Chairs, which closed at midday today.
The deadline to submit an expression of interest for the Advisory Groups is midday on Friday 18 November 2022.
ADVISORY GROUP SELECTION AND MEMBERSHIP
The Subject Chair and Deputy Chair(s), working with QAA, are responsible for selecting Advisory Group members.
The membership of each Advisory Group will be drawn from the four nations of the UK, and be appropriately balanced between academic and professional practice, where relevant to the subject. To allow appointment of representative groups they welcome expressions of interest from academics and students from diverse backgrounds for each subject.
A major benefit of being a QAA Member is the opportunity to shape and inform policies, standards and sector reference points, of which Subject Benchmark Statements are a key aspect.
Membership of Advisory Groups will also include:
* different types of providers (including different methods of programme delivery and different subject specialism)
* industry or employer groups (where applicable for the subject)
* professional, statutory and regulatory bodies (where applicable for the subject)
* representatives of the principal subject association(s) and/or network(s)
* a current or former student, student body or an organisation representing the interests of students in the subject area.
EXPECTATIONS AND COMMITMENT
Between four and six Advisory Group meetings during normal working hours (09:00-17:00) over the course of six to nine months. These meetings will usually be no longer than three hours.
Group members will be required to draft, write and review text outside of group meetings, and there may be some out-of-session communications.
There is no remuneration for a role on a QAA Advisory Group. Advisory Group meetings will take place online using Microsoft Teams, and documents will be held centrally on a QAA SharePoint site.
ADDITIONS TO THE STATEMENTS
QAA is committed to ensuring the Statements reflect developments in the subject communities and agendas in the higher education sector. The revised Statements will include consideration of the following topics, so we are keen to hear from the academic community who have both subject expertise and awareness or experience in one or more of the following areas:
* Education for sustainable development
* Equality, diversity and inclusivity - with a focus both on inclusion in the context of curriculum content and student characteristics
* Accessibility and the requirements of disabled students
* Enterprise and/or entrepreneurship education.
All the best,
Einar

Subject: QAA Subject Benchmark Review - EOI for Chair / Deputy Chair
Hi everyone,
The QAA has launched an EOI call for Chairs and Deputy Chairs for next year's review of the Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies Subject Benchmark Statement. Full details on their website:
https://www.qaa.ac.uk/quality-code/subject-benchmark-statements/call-for-expressions-of-interest-for-chairs-and-deputy-chairs-for-qaa-subject-benchmark-statements-2022-23
The deadline for expressions of interest is midday on 10 October 2022.
BACKGROUND
The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) leads the development and review of Subject Benchmark Statements. These Statements are reviewed on a seven-year cyclical basis to ensure they are as useful as possible for discipline communities and can fulfil a range of purposes across the sector, including course design and providing support for securing academic standards.
For 2022-23, the QAA are now inviting expressions of interest from the academic and subject community to act as Chairs and Deputy Chairs for a range of subjects, which includes the statement for Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies.
As a subject association covering the relevant benchmark statement, MeCCSA has been invited to put forward candidates for consideration. Please do let me know if you are intending to submit an EOI and if you wish to be nominated by MeCCSA (email me on [log in to unmask]). Note that you will still have to submit the EOI through the normal route.
Applications for Advisory Group members will run end of October-December.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHAIR/DEPUTY CHAIR
The Chair/Deputy Chair of each Subject Benchmark Statement will work closely with the QAA Liaison Officer assigned to each SBS Advisory Group. Together, they are responsible for selecting the Advisory Group members. Both the membership of Advisory Groups and the content of the Statements will embody QAA’s commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity across all our work.
The Chairs will coordinate the work of the Advisory Group in the review and process of writing the Statement. They will work together with the QAA Liaison Officer to ensure the Statement meets QAA requirements and is completed and published to an agreed timeframe. The Deputy Chair will deputise for the Chair where required and have specific responsibilities for the operation of the Advisory Group that will be agreed in advance with the Chair and Liaison Officer.
All the best,
Einar
