The School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary University of London encourages outstanding postdoctoral scholars to apply to the 2023 Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships scheme. Details of the scheme, including eligibility criteria, can be found here: www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships.

The School has a vibrant research culture across its departments: Comparative Literature & Culture; Film Studies; Linguistics; Modern Languages & Cultures (French, German, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Latin American Studies, Russian, Chinese, Arabic); and the Language Centre, which has a research culture in Applied Linguistics. 

School staff take part in a wide range of department-based and interdisciplinary seminars, and are active within a number of research centres within and beyond the School, including the Centres for Childhood Cultures; the Study of the Nineteenth Century and its Legacies; Film and Ethics; Anglo-German Cultural Relations; Catalan Studies; the Study of Migration, the History of Emotions; Mind in Society.

The School has a dedicated department of Comparative Literature with colleagues working in the following broad fields:

Classics, Adaptation Studies and Classical Reception, Nineteenth-Century Studies (Rachel Bryant Davies)
Chinese and Indian literatures, south-south comparison (Adhira Mangalagiri)
French and English literatures of the C18th, sexology, translation studies (Will McMorran)
Comparative Caribbean Studies, literature and crisis, literature and the environment (Kasia Mika)
Literature and the Human Sciences, Theory of Myth, History of Comp Lit, German intellectual history (Angus Nicholls)
Postcolonial Studies, Medical Humanities, South Asian Literatures (Shital Pravinchandra)
Translation Studies; modern Arabic, Francophone and Ottoman literatures; Arabic critical theory (Hannah Scott Deuchar)
World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Russian Literary Theory (Galin Tihanov)
Children's Literature and Childhood Culture from 1850 to the present (Kiera Vaclavik)

We would be delighted to hear from postdoctoral candidates working in relevant subject areas who are considering applying to the postdoctoral scheme, and would be happy to offer support in preparing applications. Initial enquiries should be directed to members of staff closest to your research interests (email addresses are available on our website). It is advised to approach us well in advance of the deadline.

Expressions of Interest should:
1. Demonstrate that the applicant meets the Leverhulme Trust’s eligibility requirements, set out at: www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early‐career‐fellowships.
Please state in a series of bullet points how the applicant meets the Trust’s eligibility
requirements.
2. Include an academic CV of not more than 2 pages to demonstrate the research stature of the applicant.
3. Include an outline research proposal including title, abstract (250 words), statement of past and current research (250 words) and 2 page (A4) project outline.

The School will announce which candidates it will be putting forward by 16 December 2022. We will then work with our applicants to finalize submissions for the Leverhulme Trust deadline of 23 February 2023.
