Dear colleagues,
with apologies for cross-posting and for the short-notice, I would like
to share the details of an upcoming online event organised by the Film
Education Journal.
On Thursday *November 24th* at 16:30 GMT, we will present a talk by
Yu-Lun (Luc) Sung, who is a director of photography, writer and lecturer
at London South Bank University.
Yu-Lun will address the topic of decolonising cinematography education,
by focussing in particular on lighting ratios and textures for Black and
Asian skin tones.
In the talk, Yu-Lun will address how diversifying the range of aesthetic
traditions from which lighting principles are drawn can lead to a
decolonisation of established educational practices.
The event will be hosted by Dr Alex Nevill of Kingston University London.
Attendance is free, and further details can be found below. We hope to
see many of you there.
All best,
FEJ Administrator

• Yu-Lun Sung: "Decolonising Cinematography Education. Experimenting
with Lighting Ratios and Textures for Black and Asian Skin Tones"
Here is Yu-Lun's abstract for the event:
'Painting is often referred to for inspiration as cinematographers learn
to compose and represent light and shadow in an aesthetically considered
manner. In this respect, it is noteworthy that the painters generally
studied by film-making students are mostly from Renaissance traditions
and produced work featuring predominately White models. This gap of
racial representation in cinematographic pedagogy is stark and has long
been overlooked. My intervention mounts an enquiry into the lack of
diversity in cinematography education, with qualitative and quantitative
case studies undertaken in university workshops for film students,
examining how different aesthetic traditions, such as Asian ink
paintings, could pave new ways for decolonising the conventional
conceptions of lighting ratios and textures.'
The event is free to attend and is geared both towards those with a
specific interest in film education, and those interested in film
culture and practice more generally.
This event will be live captioned (speech-to-text)
The event will take place online via Zoom, and the link will be emailed
to attendees a day in advance.
