Dear BAFTSS Members
Call for participants for proposed BAFTSS Panel on 'Video Essays in Teaching and Assessment'
We invite proposals to contribute to a panel at the 11th BAFTSS conference, on the use of video essays in teaching and assessment within Film Studies and cognate subjects. Video essays are becoming a commonplace method of assessment within our discipline(s), contributing to its sustainability and expansion by supporting student diversity and different learning preferences, offering new ways of analysing moving images, building multimedia skills through 'authentic assessment', and varying assessment types beyond the traditional essay. We envision this panel as an opportunity to share experiences and best practice, and address key issues and challenges arising from this new form of assessment.
Areas of attention might include (but are not limited to):
- how students can engage with audio-visual objects of study in the same medium, bypassing the ekphrasis of translating them into written or spoken language
- assessment rubrics and marking criteria
- submission processes
- academic integrity
- legal and ethical considerations
- student needs and diversity
- technical facilities and training necessary for staff and students
BAFTSS colleagues interested in participating in this panel should write a brief (max 200 words) description of your interest and experience in this topic and send it to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] by Monday 21st November. We will confirm panellists by 28th November in advance of the main deadline.
We look forward to hearing from you!
