Dear colleagues,

The Institute of Music Research at the University of Würzburg in
Germany is seeking two mid-career or senior musicologists, one to fill
the chair of “Music of the European Modern Period” (especially
European music of the 18th and 19th centuries) and one to fill the
chair of "Music of the Pre-Modern: Antiquity and the Middle Ages" (any
geographical area). As the majority of the professors in the institute
have recently or will soon be retiring, this is an exciting time of
renewal with great potential for new program building and so we are
seeking innovative and enthusiastic new colleagues. [Though not
specified in the post description, there are those of us in the
institute who would be delighted to have a new musicology colleague
with expertise in performance studies!]

For those unfamiliar with the German academic system, to be eligible
for a W3 ranking professorship, one needs to have completed the
habilitation degree or equivalent -- the equivalent being a monograph
or series of articles based on research conducted after the PhD. In
general, those qualifying for the North American ranks of associate or
full professor or the British ranks of senior lecturer, reader, or
professor would be eligible.

The application deadline is 11 November 2022. Applications will be
accepted in English or German.

The formal position announcements follow below. Please forward widely.

Best regards,

Prof. Juniper Hill
Institute of Music Research
University of Würzburg

*********************************************

The Faculty of Arts of the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg
(Historical, Philological, Cultural, and Geographical Studies) invites
applications for the position of
University Professor (grade W3) of Musicology (Music of the European
Modern Period)
– successor to Professor Ulrich Konrad –
in the Institute of Music Research, to be filled by 1 October 2023 as
a permanent civil-service position.

The successful candidate will represent the discipline of musicology
in research and teaching of the music of the European Modern Period in
its full breadth and complexity. The principal focus will be on the
music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Furthermore, openness to
innovative paradigms of methodology in the humanities and cultural
studies, to the development of new subject areas, and to dealing with
artefacts in the study collection "Musical Instruments and Media" is
highly desirable, as is the willingness to contribute substantially to
long-term musicological projects and to the Centre for Philology and
Digitality "Kallimachos" (ZPD) of the University.

Experience in academic self-governance, in the establishment of new
degree programmes, and in the acquisition and implementation of
third-party-funded projects is required. Strong networking in the
national and international academic community is assumed. Teaching
duties include the offering of courses for all modularised degree
programmes in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, and Music Education
represented at the University of Würzburg, as well as active
participation in all examinations.

Requirements for the position are a completed Ph.D., pedagogical
suitability, and a particular aptitude for academic work, which will
typically be substantiated by the quality of the candidate’s doctoral
degree. Additionally, an Habilitation or the proof of equivalent
academically relevant achievements in the field of Historical
Musicology is expected. The latter may have been achieved within the
framework of an assistant professorship or outside the university
sector. At the time of appointment into civil service the candidate
must be under the age of 52 (according to Article 10 section 3 of the
Bavarian Act on Personnel in Higher Education – Bayerisches
Hochschulpersonalgesetz, BayHSchPG). Should the applicant not qualify
for appointment as a civil servant, employment under a private-law
relationship may be possible.
The University of Würzburg attaches great importance to the intensive
support of students and doctoral candidates, and expects a
corresponding commitment from its faculty.
The University of Würzburg seeks to increase the proportion of women
in research and teaching, and therefore strongly encourages qualified
female scholars to apply.
With equal qualifications, preference will be given to candidates with
disabilities.

Applications including the usual documents (dated and signed
curriculum vitae; graduation certificates; transcripts of records and
degree certificates; a list of publications; a record of previous
third-party-funded projects stating the applicant's own function;
teaching record, and - if available - evaluation results; a list of
supervised theses and dissertations) should be submitted to the
following address: Dekan der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität
Würzburg, Am Hubland, 97074 Würzburg, at the latest by 11.11.2022.
Applicants are requested to complete the application form and send it
as a Word file via e-mail ([log in to unmask])
to the Office of the Dean.

By submitting application documents, the applicant consents to the
entered data's being copied, saved, and processed in electronic form
for the selection procedure, being eventually forwarded to the experts
involved. The applicant also agrees with the policy that the documents
sent will be returned only after the conclusion of the appointment
process. Application forms and further information are available at
www.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de/berufungen/
