Call for Papers: Linguistic Geography
AAG Annual Meeting in Denver, March 23–March 27, 2023
Organizer: Greg Niedt
Deadline for abstracts: Sunday, 30 October, 2022
The Linguistic Geography sessions at AAG draw on interdisciplinary connections—human geography and linguistic anthropology, sociology and media studies—to consider how language and discourse shape conceptions of space and place. What things do we say about places that shape our attitudes towards them? How do the communities that inhabit them use language(s), from signage to graffiti, in official policy and everyday conversation, to express themselves or make claims to a place? The session is intended to show how questions like this can enrich geography work in a wide variety of spaces, as well as amplify the voices of the people and communities who occupy them.
(The work of Yi-Fu Tuan has been especially influential on this approach to the field; in light of his passing, this session is dedicated in his memory.)
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
The call is open for any researchers investigating topics such as language and space, linguistic landscapes (language use in public spaces), language and power, ethnophysiography, toponymy, dialectology, linguistic cartography, metageography, and the representation of places in discourse. Presenters are especially encouraged to consider how their work aligns with the annual theme, “Toward More Just Geographies,” and its focus on “the spatial dimensions, scope, and scale of racial and social justice, as well as obstacles to its realization.”
Please send your abstract to Greg Niedt at [log in to unmask] by **Sunday, 30 October** if you would like your paper to be considered for the session. When emailing, please also indicate whether you plan (at this point) to **attend in-person or virtually**; advance notice will be needed to set up the session as a hybrid. (Note that participants must also register for the conference and submit their abstract to AAG's session gallery by **Thursday, 10 November**; see https://www.aag.org/events/aag2023/ for more details.) And of course, feel free to send this call to others who might be interested!
Cheers,
Greg Niedt (organizer)
