Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to invite you to the final workshop of the ERC project NOSCEMUS. It is dedicated to the topic “Polemics and defamation in early modern science”. Instead of just discussing data and arguments, early modern scientific texts often contain attacks on the opponent as a person (ethnicity, world view, social status, gender, ...) or on the form in which a thesis is presented (spelling, style, choice of literary genre, ...). In the workshop, we want to take a closer look at such scientific invectives as literature and try to answer, inter alia, the following questions:
- Who is being attacked (e.g., whole groups or individuals, living persons or ancient/medieval predecessors, ...)?
- What is being criticized instead of the actual argument (e.g., belief, language skills, ...)?
- In what form is the criticism expressed (e.g., mentioned en passant or in full-blown attack, literary genre, ...)?
- What strategies are chosen to avoid inappropriate criticism?
The workshop will take place in person at the University of Innsbruck, but a live stream will be provided. Please visit our website for the programme and further details: https://www.uibk.ac.at/projects/noscemus/saeva-scientia.html
Kind regards,
Dominik Berrens
