Dear all,
Please join us for the next seminar in our series from the BSA New Materialisms study group, taking place online (via Zoom) on Monday 20 June, 2-3pm. We are thrilled to be hosting Professor Deevia Bhana from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, who will be discussing her latest work on 'Teenage girls and the entanglement with online porn: a new feminist materialist perspective'.
This event is free to attend and everyone is welcome but please register beforehand here: https://www.britsoc.co.uk/events/key-bsa-events/society-materiality-and-the-more-than-human-international-seminar-two/
Best wishes, and abstract below.
Teenage girls and the entanglement with online porn: a new feminist materialist perspective
What can porn mean to teenage girls if we are encouraged to shift the optic to see it as an assemblage, full of intensities, rather than an external force with negatives effects breaking down childhood sexual innocence? In this discussion I take on the challenge by refusing to place young sexualities ‘under erasure’- a common denominator in popular debate and policy initiatives grounded in protecting the young from the corruptive force of sexuality. Instead, by drawing on new feminist materialist perspectives and through conversations with South African teenage girls, I address what girls can do by examining their experiences with online porn and sexually explicit materials as they navigate an assemblage that seeks to silence their sexual becomings. I argue that girls’ sexual network connectivity and exploration of online porn through human
and more-than-human elements, rather than based on sexual muteness speaks to the entanglement of their desire for knowing and learning ‘sexually’ while resisting gender oppressive structures. In doing so, the paper destabilises the current danger narrative circulating in the country through a radical interpretation of what is possible to know about girls and porn as they generate insights into their critical capacities even if these insights trouble our assumptions about what girls’ sexual agency should look like. In conclusion, a new feminist materialist lens makes possible to examine how things and relationalities aggregate together to produce opportunities for girls to discuss their online sexual adventures as fully agentive sexual beings.
