Dear Colleagues,

Reference: The "100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals" Initiative

The COVID-19 pandemic and the current conflicts seen in various countries, have been having various negative influences in the processes leading to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A variety of papers published during the pandemic have helped to shed some light on its implications to sustainabilty and well-being:

And future trends in the world as a whole: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-69284-1

But much research is still needed. If left unattended, these problems may undermine the achievement of the SDGs by 2030. There is therefore a perceived need to accelerate the efforts towards the realisation of the actions envisaged by the SDGs.

One area where action is required, is the need to address the various information and knowledge gaps surrounding many sustainable development issues. Research can here play a key role.

Departing from this reality, the initiative "100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals" is being started. From September 2022 to September 2025, researchers from round the world and across a wide range of disciplines will work together in undertaking studies on a set of topics, leading to scientific papers to be published in high quality peer-reviewed journals, all of which aimed at supporting the acceleration of the SDGs.

The initiative "100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals" is led by Professor Walter Leal https://walterleal.info/, a professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), which is the UK's number 1 sustainable University
- placed first in the People and Planet University League 2021: https://www.mmu.ac.uk/sustainability. Professor Leal is a leading expert on sustainable development and climate change adaptation, Chair of the European School of Sustainability Science and Research https://esssr.eu/, and of the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/ftz-nk/programmes/iusdrp/, the European and world´s
largest networks of universities undertaking research on matters related to sustainable development respectively, and with several hundred publications on matters related to sustainability published to date, to his credit. He is also founding editor of the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education he created in the year 2000: https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/journal/ijshe.

The initiative "100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals" will run from 2022 to 2026, with a total of 100 papers to be published in peer-reviewed journals during this period.

This is an unprecedented effort, moblising well established sustainability researchers on the one hand, and doctoral students from all geographical regions on the other - so as to engage the next generation of sustainability researchers-, working on a truly interdisciplinary way. The concerted effort in the studies and production of the 100 scientific publications will provide a solid and lasting contribution to the literature on sustainable development, in a way never seen before. The information and data deriving from the papers will also represent a concrete contribution from the university community,
to the implementation of the SDGs. The details on how to join this effort can be seen here:
https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/ftz-nk/programmes/100papers/.
Rgds,
The Coordination Team
