We reserve the option to call in former students, but have not done so in practice for some time. We advise programme teams to send former students an email (based on a template) warning them about the possible consequences of sharing their work. (Anecdotally there has been an increase in cases where the former student has uploaded the work to one of the essay mill type site. In these instances we advise the former student to get it taken down and if it contains University IP tell the website to remove.)

At UCA, if both students still registered then it would be investigated as possible case of collusion. If both parties found guilty, then each would receive penalty depending on extent of plagiarism. If only one student registered then only the student still registered would/could receive a penalty for plagiarism depending on extent.

Hi all,
Please could you advise on what your regulations would enable you to do in the following hypothetical scenario:
In the scenario a student who had successfully completed a module previously (and is still registered on the course) shares their work with a student from the year below who submits it as their own work.
Would you investigate the student who shared their work through your academic offences process or would you refer it on to a different process? What penalties might you look at? Would this depend on whether it could be proven on the balance of probabilities that the student shared their work with the intention of it being used by the other student in a way that would constitute academic misconduct? What would you do if the student who shared their work had been awarded and already left the university?
