Thank you, Robert. This is deeply moving.
It appears that one of the "lessons" the Russian army has learnt from the war in Afghanistan from 1979-1989 is that sending solders' bodies home in sealed zinc coffins for burial is "worse" than a packet of ashes and a demand for a non-disclosure agreement. Even considering conservative estimates (not from the Russian MoD, which constantly lies) it is likely that more Russian soldiers have already died in seven weeks in Ukraine than in the whole of the almost ten year war in Afghanistan. Putin's war on Ukraine is a tragedy for Russia as well as Ukraine. Will he ever acknowledge that?
Stephen
PS Of course, the zinc coffins from Afghanistan were highlighted by Svetlana Alexievich in her book called (depending on the translation) "Zinky Boys" or "Boys in Zinc".

I have along admired the work of Tatiana Voltskaya. It is a joy - albeit a painful joy - to see this powerful poem so well translated. I must follow her work more closely - and also look out for Dmitry Manin's translations.

All the best, Robert
