Call for Participation
* Eric Dyer: Experiential Storytelling, Immersive Animated Sculpture, Live Performance – 7th June 2022
* Palgrave Animation Book Series Launch – 8th June 2022
We are pleased to notify you of two events, both hosted at the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) on consecutive days in June.
Eric Dyer: Experiential Storytelling, Immersive Animated Sculpture, Live Performance – 7th June 2022
On the 7th June we are delighted to welcome world-renowned animation artist Eric Dyer at AUB as part of his Leverhulme-funded Visiting Professorship. Dyer will present a keynote lecture on his practice and the exciting work he has been doing with students and staff at AUB as part of his Visiting Professorship. Dyer’s inspiring work challenges us to rethink what animation is and how it can engage people. Animation is still a young art form with many underexplored avenues of expression. This event will explore how animation can be used for participatory sculpture, immersive kinetic environments, live performance and other experiences of exploration and discovery. Dyer draws on all of this and more through works based on one of the keystones of animation – the zoetrope, or ‘wheel of life’.
Alongside Dyer’s keynote presentation, we invite expressions of interest to participate in this event so that we can facilitate interdisciplinary connections between animation, fine art, modelmaking, architecture and other disciplines, and build collaborative research and knowledge exchange bridges. This event will not be organised as a ‘standard’ conference or symposium - it will run more as a ‘roundtable’ event, to foster dialogue and creative connections. We therefore do not require abstracts for traditional 20-minute academic papers (although we are potentially open to these if you have one), but welcome brief ‘position statements’ or outlines of ‘micro-talks’ from interested parties that will enable us to arrange a structure for the day.
Topics could include:
* Specific critical responses to/discussions of Dyer’s work;
* Discussions of other artists who are working in related ways;
* The interface between animation, sculpture, optical toys;
* ‘Expanded’ and ‘performative’ animation.
We also welcome the opportunity to exhibit any relevant practical work colleagues have in this area.
If you would like to participate in this event, please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and outline your interests in this area.
The deadline for your expressions of interest in joining this event is Friday 20th May. The event is free to attend.
Palgrave Animation Book Series Launch – 8th June 2022
The above event will be followed by a book series launch for Palgrave Animation [https://link.springer.com/series/15948/books] on 8th June 2022, also at Arts University Bournemouth. Paul, Caroline and several of our authors will outline their work that has been published in the series so far. The first book in the series, The Crafty Animator (2019), featured a chapter on Eric Dyer: he will also be present on the 8th June. We particularly welcome attendees who might want to find out more about proposing a book for the series and helping to develop Palgrave Animation as we move forward, but anyone interested in hearing more about the series is welcome to attend. This event will be followed by a wine reception hosted by Palgrave Macmillan.
If you would like to attend one or both of these events, please email Paul and Caroline on the email addresses noted above by 20th May 2022.
Nearer the time, we shall send out updates about these two exciting events.
All best,
Paul and Caroline
