Does internationalising our curriculum change academia?
Academic staff are routinely expected to deliver an internationalised curriculum for creative courses. ViEWS’ second Quality Conversation asks what internationalising the curriculum actually means and considers how the growing offer of internationalised courses affects the expectations and experiences of both staff and students.
Within a complex programme delivery structure, staff are required to devise and deliver cutting edge, high level curricula, alongside an allied requirement to ‘create’ global citizens. The impact of an internationalised curriculum is wide reaching, extending beyond the UK educational sector and affecting all students and staff
Academic teams are expected to deliver a portfolio where they are aware of and respond to the social and cultural contexts from which students come, and which staff may have little direct experience of. We need to understand how pedagogy can be adapted, in order to realistically meet these expectations in a world where the relationship between the academic and the student is arguably being fundamentally altered.
We will explore the contribution international students make to the collective learning journey and strive to understand their experiences of Higher Education in the UK. Many course providers have been accused of making compromises to secure international students and we will consider the impact these decisions may have on academic quality and the international student experience.
We recognise the challenges that internationalisation poses, but we also want to use this conversation as a means to understand, explore and celebrate the contribution internationalisation makes to academic life, and to the cultural vitality of the contemporary University.
The conversation will be facilitated by Mark Dunford. Our programme starts with a presentation from Dr Marita Grimwood which is followed by a conversation with Romano Ando (La Sapienza, Rome), Eunice Geustyn (Ruth Prowse College of Art, Cape Town), Lorenzo Imbesi (La Sapienza, Rome) and Paul Inman (Reading University) who will be joined by Sheena Calvert from ViEWS/UAL.
