British Sociological Association Emotions Study Group
2022 Symposium: Emotions & Social Change

Virtual event via Zoom
Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th June, 2022

**Call for Papers**

Sociologists of emotion, alongside colleagues in cognate fields like the history of emotions, have shed light on the historical specificity of emotions and their emergence and shifts within historical moments and social contexts. Amidst the current moment of dramatic political crises, a years-long global pandemic, and the rapidly transforming landscapes of all spheres of social life, we are called to examine emotions of and in social change. For this year’s symposium, we invite presentations on any area of the sociology of emotions, highlighting either the way emotions have changed, or been changed by, shifting social contexts, or conversely, how emotional life has maintained a thread of stability despite powerful currents of change. For this year’s symposium, we invite presentations on any area of the sociology of emotions, as well as contributions from scholars from across the social sciences and humanities. Postgraduates and early career researchers are especially encouraged to contribute. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

    • Emotions in historical context
    • Emotions and institutions
    • Emotions and culture
    • Lived emotional and affective experience
    • Emotions in power and politics
    • Emotion and the everyday
    • Theorising emotion and affect
    • Emotions in methodologies

In order to make participation as accessible as possible to participants, who we appreciate are working under particularly complicated and challenging conditions at this time, the symposium will take place over two half days, with one half-day session in the morning and the other half-day in the afternoon. We appreciate your flexibility if your circumstances permit it; however, if you have strict scheduling limitations, please note in your abstract submission email whether you prefer to present in a morning or afternoon session, and we will do everything we can to accommodate you.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words to [log in to unmask] by 11:59pm GMT on Monday, 3rd May, 2022.

----------

Best wishes,
Lisa, Fiona, and Lisa
