We are seeking a Research Assistant/Associate to work on the “End-users Fixing Fairness Issues (Effi): Exploring the role and impact of end-user human-in-the-loop tools in ensuring fair Artificial Intelligence (AI)” project to investigate new human-in-the loop fairness tools at the School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow (https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/)
The research will be at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and AI to investigate fairness and bias. The main focus will be to investigate how to integrate end-user feedback into human-in-the-loop AI tools. The work will involve conducting machine learning experiments to investigate end-user feedback integration strategies to mitigate bias and fairness issues, implementing prototypes and user interfaces, and designing and conducting a user study to evaluate the effects of end-user feedback on fairness and bias. Studies are likely to focus on financial services but could include other domains. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to research publications. This work aligns with other projects currently conducted at University of Glasgow into ethical AI systems.
The ideal candidate for this position will have an interest in human-in-the-loop machine learning for ethical and responsible AI development. You will have a background in machine learning or data science but also be familiar with HCI principles and approaches. You will have at least a Masters in Computer Science, Data Science or a cognate discipline, or equivalent, for an appointment at Grade 6. For appointment at Grade 7, candidates are required to hold or have submitted a PhD.
You will work with Simone Stumpf (https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/staff/simonestumpf/) who is based in the School of Computing Science. You will also collaborate with Fujitsu Ltd, the leading Japanese information and communication technology company offering a full range of technology products, solutions and services. University of Glasgow is top in Scotland for research impact (REF 2014), and typically ranks in the top 10 for Computer Science in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2022). The GIST section in the School of Computing Science is a growing and vibrant research community with an aim to create and use novel, interactive systems to better understand, entertain, protect and support humans in their everyday lives.
It is the University of Glasgow’s mission to foster an inclusive climate, which ensures equality in our working, learning, research and teaching environment.
