Latin Elephant invites Latin American Artists to submit their ideas for socially engaged projects with South London Gallery and Gasworks

*Application Deadline 19 April 2022*

This opportunity for two Latin American artists based in the UK will enable practitioners at different stages of their career to undertake and produce a socially engaged project with Latin Elephant, and South London Gallery and Gasworks at the end of June and July, respectively.

These two opportunities for Latin American artists are supported by an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants and aim to create artistic exchange and experimentation with a focus on the following topics: the politics of space; re-imagining urban space; how to inhabit redeveloped areas; the relationship between place and identity; a sense of belonging; and related topics. Proposals must take as a case and starting point the area of Elephant and Castle, in London. We seek to support art practices that are process and research based, aiming to create opportunities for artists to research and encourage interaction, participation, and community participation.

Each project will comprise:

• An artist fee of £1,500 (per artist/duo/collective) to produce a socially engaged project and deliver a workshop, a written piece and a visual essay to be published (print and digitally), and the opportunity to present a public conversation about their practice.

• A materials budget of £300 to deliver the workshop.

• Pastoral and curatorial support from Latin Elephant, and Gasworks and South London Gallery, respectively, to research, create and deliver the workshop, written piece and visual essay, and a public conversation.

• Access to South London Gallery and Gasworks’ equipment, subject to availability.

Guidelines:

• Submissions can include proposals for new work to be made specifically for this call.

• There is no age limit.

• Artists are required to deliver workshops, provide images, and write texts to share the project, findings, and experience.

• Applicants must be based in the UK. This includes international people who live or work in the UK.

• Applicants can live anywhere in the UK, but they will need to cover mobilisation and accommodation in London if their projects are selected.

• We accept applications from duo or collectives. However, the conditions for each project would remain the same.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for art projects and ideas that are driven by a critical, research-based, and social approach. These two opportunities encourage artists working on collaborative, participative and socially engaged art to explore, research, and experiment with their practices and with the communities at Elephant and Castle.

We will consider and select the artists based on the following:

• The ideas, research, and projects of the artist’s current practices.

• The ideas and questions of the proposed project.

• The project plan to engage and relate to the communities of Elephant and Castle.

• The potential social impact of the project.

• The feasibility of the proposal.

Application Process

Please send an online application to this email: [log in to unmask]

We accept application in text, video (10 minutes maximum) or sound (10 minutes maximum) where you can share and provide the following information:

1- An artist’s statement and areas of interest (up to 300 words)

2- A sheet with name, contact address, e-mail, and telephone number.

3- A minimum of 10 images or video links or audio clips of recent work. Please, include a brief description when necessary.

4- A CV of no more than 2 pages.

5- A project and ideas to work on, including what and how would you like to explore, research, and approach the Elephant and Castle area (up to 350 words). Bear in mind this is the first step to start a conversation and can be changed.

Note that there is a 10MB limit on pdf submissions.

Application Deadline: 19 April 2022

We will inform those who have made successful submissions by April 25, 2022.

These projects will be supported by an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants, and are part of Latin Elephant’s Public Programme 2021-2022, Inhabiting Spaces, developed in collaboration, partnership and with support from South London Gallery, Gasworks and Tate.
