You are warmly invited to register for the upcoming Listening in the Disciplines event plus short AGM, hosted by the SIG Developing, Teaching and Testing Academic Listeners. This event take place on Friday 27th May from 15:00 to 16:30 (UK time) via Zoom.
Our 4 speakers for the event will be:
Alison Leslie (University of Leeds): 'This presentation will provide a snapshot of the listening needs identified by PGT students in Sociology and Social Policy and a critical evaluation of some of the activities designed and delivered by the EAP lecturer to respond to these as part of their embedded in-sessional provision.'
Matt Walpole (University of Sussex): 'This talk will reflect on the development of teaching transferable lecture listening skills to a pre-sessional group of Chinese postgraduate Business students. It will briefly explore a) the role of authenticity when creating discipline-specific listening activities, b) the use of Alexander et. al.’s (2008) ‘Classification of Rhetorical Functions’ in helping students identify purpose & structure from lecture introductions and c) the concept of Caudwell’s (2018) ‘Greenhouse, Garden, Jungle’ analogy for decoding language. Whilst the disciplinary context of the lectures referred to in this talk is Business, the information can be applicable to other disciplines.'
Samantha Stark (University of Leeds): 'In this presentation, I will follow-up on my talk from last year regarding the Law Pre-Sessional programme. Specifically, I will focus on listening circles and reading while listening.'
Etain Casey (SOAS): 'This presentation will refer to Development Studies and to a minor extent Business Management. The areas of action research covered will be students’ and teachers’ issues in addressing, reacting to and assessing comprehension of listening materials from different genres i.e. planned lectures; authentic interviews; independent film makers; protests; and conference presentations. The presentation will point out the difficulty in encouraging students to evaluate and interpret the relative significance of these genres in their learning and in compiling effective notes.'
