RGS-IBG 2022 CFP: Futures of trespass
sponsored by Geographies of Justice Research Group
The recent passage of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill (2022) has further criminalised trespass in England and Wales, reviving concerns about the future of land justice, property access, and reclamation. In this paper session, we invite contributions that address futures of trespassing - both in the UK and abroad - in the context of increased police powers, privatization, and the hardening of property boundaries. We are particularly interested in views on the differential impact of efforts to enclose and abolish access to land, housing, and space, including insights into how criminalisation will affect marginalised communities, as well as broader questions of land (in)justice. We see this event as establishing a forum for ongoing discussions and will seek to build on this panel towards future collaborations.
Papers could explore themes including, but not limited to:
--Trespassing as a window onto private property
--Criminalisation of ‘trespassing’ communities (e.g. Gypsy-Travellers, activists, homeless)
--Violence against (racialised) trespassers
--Comparative research uncovering relations of trespass, property, and (settler)colonialism
--Legal geographies of trespassing
--Access and creative trespassing as a form of activism
We are planning to conduct the session in-person. If you are interested in joining us, please submit a title and an abstract (up to 250 words) to Sam Burgum ([log in to unmask]) and Elsa Noterman ([log in to unmask]) by Sunday, 13 March 2022.
