Centre for Film, Media, Discourse and Culture at the University of Wolverhampton present
Jon Stewart on his new book "Dylan, Lennon, Marx & God"
Thurs 24 Feb, 4-5.15pm (UK time)
“Dylan, Lennon, Marx & God” (Cambridge University Press, 2021) is a scholarly but accessible work of non-fiction that will appeal to fans of both artists and anyone interested in popular culture or politics. The first ever dual biography of Bob Dylan and John Lennon, it analyses three elements of their life and work -- protest, history and spirituality. The “Marx” section draws on well-known post-Marxist cultural theorists, sociologist R. Serge Denisoff and literary critic Fredric Jameson. The “God” part offers a ground-breaking scientific analysis of Dylan and Lennon’s supernatural beliefs using evolutionary psychology. In structural terms the book’s focus pulls progressively outward … from the single issue of 1960s anti-war protest music, through the historical themes in Dylan’s and Lennon’s nineteenth century influences, toward the grand existential questions raised by their faith. It challenges our preconceptions concerning popular music and contemporary culture and offers many parallels with current events.
Dr. Jon Stewart is guitarist for platinum-selling Britpop band Sleeper and, since 2019, for influential indie pioneers The Wedding Present. He is Course Leader for the MA Popular Music Practice at BIMM Institute in Brighton and has published academic research on The Archies, Devo and Brian Eno, Robert Johnson, Joe Meek, grassroots venues, music memoirs, protest songs, The Wire, and YouTube.
