Curatorial Conversations bring to the Warburg Institute curators of world-leading museums and galleries to discuss their work. The conversations, led by Warburg academics, discuss the issues of setting the curatorial agenda and staging meaningful encounters with objects. The series is designed to draw out discussion of the discoveries made, challenges tackled and the lessons learned in installing objects in the permanent collection and putting together internationally renowned exhibitions.

All events are online via zoom, free to attend with advance booking.

Tuesday 25 January 2022: 5.30-7.00pm (GMT)
'Curating the Cosmic House'
Booking: https://warburg.sas.ac.uk/events/curatorial-conversation-cosmic-house
The Cosmic House is an extraordinary building designed as a family home by the architectural critic and designer Charles Jencks (1939-2019) together with his wife, writer and designer Maggie Keswick Jencks (1941-1995). Marked by a collaborative process involving architects, artists and craftsmen, since its completion in 1983 the house has served as an artistic and intellectual hub of post-modernism. The house, with its collection of artefacts, library and archive, is now open to the public, and invites questions as to how a private passion can contribute to building a new public institution.

Each of the participants in this Curatorial Conversation occupies a distinct position in relation to the project - Dr Eszter Steierhoffer as Artistic Director of the Jencks Foundation, Eddie Heathcote as the Keeper of Meaning of The Cosmic House, and Marysia Lewandowska as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence.

Thursday 3 February 2022: 5.30-7.00pm (GMT)
'Do the Old Masters Matter Anymore?
Booking: https://warburg.sas.ac.uk/events/curatorial-conversation-old-masters
Jennifer Scott, Director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, recently oversaw a complete re-presentation of the Gallery's world-famous collection. As the UK's first purpose-built public art gallery, there is a generally accepted view that Dulwich's Old Master paintings are important - but do artists like Rembrandt and Raphael really have a place in today's world? What can museum directors and curators do to keep Collections feeling fresh and relevant? And what is the key to a successful display?

Jennifer Scott has been The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery since April 2017. She was previously Director of the Holburne Museum, Bath (2014-2017), and Curator of Paintings at Royal Collection Trust (2004-2014). She previously worked at the National Gallery, London and National Museums Liverpool. She has published widely on Dutch and Flemish painting and wrote the first survey of state portraiture from within the British Royal Collection, The Royal Portrait: Image and Impact (2010).

Wednesday 16 March 2022: *5.00-6.00pm (GMT) *earlier time
'Transforming the National Portrait Gallery'
Booking: https://warburg.sas.ac.uk/events/curatorial-conversation-national-portrait-gallery
Join Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, as he discusses the NPG's major transformation project, Inspiring People. Nicholas will talk about the redevelopment of the historical building, the redisplay of the Collection and the national programme of activity, and the future of the NPG.

Nicholas Cullinan took up his position as the Director of the National Portrait Gallery in spring 2015 following his role as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Prior to this, from 2007 to 2013, Nicholas was Curator of International Modern Art at Tate Modern, where he co-curated an exhibition of Henri Matisse's cut-outs with Sir Nicholas Serota in 2014.
