Announcing eight Research Trainee opportunities to work on our exciting new StreetLife project at the University of York
Full details: https://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/CLN744/research-trainee-x8
One of the UK’s most ancient cities, York has an extraordinary heritage and resilient communities. But key parts of York’s civic history are being forgotten, and its city centre faces a crisis rooted in changing technology, community needs and consumer trends, made more urgent by Covid-19.
‘StreetLife’ is an ambitious partnership bringing together multiple stakeholders. It will create innovative, immersive experiences to revitalise Coney Street, combining digital innovation and physical engagement. Pop-up activities and virtual experiences will connect civic spaces to the community, transform the streetscape and its sounds, repurpose empty units, and forge links between retail premises and creative, heritage-led renewal.
We seek to appoint eight Research Trainees, who will contribute to this major, high-profile, interdisciplinary research and impact project. The successful candidates will share a passion for history, heritage and creativity, and will undertake research to recover key elements of Coney Street’s rich history and convey their findings to new audiences. The posts will take in different research strands relating to digital heritage and buildings history, music and performance, and letterpress printing. We will especially welcome candidates with relevant experience in relation to music, digital heritage and printing.
All posts will start on 1st January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. 3 posts will be full-time until June 30th; 2 will be 0.5FTE until June 30th; 1 will be 0.4FTE until June 30th; and 2 will be 0.4FTE for 3 months. Candidates are invited to indicate which of these contracts they wish to be considered for as part of their application. These posts are funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund and the role is required as part of the funding agreement.
The positions are suitable for candidates seeking upskilling or reskilling opportunities through engagement with historic crafts, skills and techniques, heritage, performance and history. Researchers who identify as Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic or Global Majority are strongly encouraged to apply as they are currently under-represented within the organisation.
Role
The successful candidate will provide research support to the StreetLife project. Responsibilities will include archival and community-focussed research, literature searches, interpretation and public engagement, and contributing to the public, commercial and creative impact of the project. They will work as part of a lively and dynamic team and will take responsibility for planning and developing their own activities in collaboration with the project leaders and coordinators. Research trainees will also undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities as delegated by the project leads and coordinators.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
The successful candidate will:
Have an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience;
Have a good knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies, along with knowledge of a relevant subject area (e.g. heritage, history, community projects, printing, music, performance);
Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to engage a range of audiences;
