Applications are invited for the post of ADAPT Centre Post Doctoral
Research Fellow at the HCI@UCD group. The PostDoc, based in the School
of Information & Communication Studies, will join the Science Foundation
Ireland ADAPT Centre and will also be a key member of the Speech
Interaction research team in HCI@UCD, working on future dialogue
interactions with and through technology. The postholder will be
expected to contribute to the development of the research programme as
well as disseminate the research conducted in leading venues.
The post is available to start from 4th January 2021 or as soon as
possible thereafter. Remote working will be considered.
===ADAPT Centre===
The research vision of ADAPT is to pioneer new forms of proactive,
scalable and integrated AI-driven Digital Content Technology that
empower individuals and society to engage in digital experiences with
control, inclusion and accountability. Concerned with personalised,
immersive, multimodal digital engagement, from multiple perspectives –
individual, algorithmic, enterprises and society – there is a long-term
goal of a Balanced Digital Society.
This vision recognises that the growing power and sophistication of
AI-driven Digital Content Technologies in delivering natural, targeted
and persuasive online experiences has started to overwhelm nearly all
parts of society.
In order to achieve this mission-oriented vision, the ADAPT research
programme looks to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to lead the
cutting edge research activities within the Interaction and Control
Research challenge within ADAPT at UCD, in particular with a focus on
conducting quantitative and qualitative research exploring speech
interface user experience, language production and voice agent
interaction, identifying user experience based issues that needs to be
addressed in future voice driven AI interactions.
===HCI@UCD Group===
The PostDoc will join the HCI@UCD group, a collaboration between UCD
Computer Science and the School of Information and Communication
Studies. With 19 members (inc. 3 faculty) it is one of the largest and
leading HCI labs in Europe. The group’s research focuses on three key
research themes; Speech Interaction (led by Assoc. Prof. Benjamin
Cowan), Mental Health and Wellbeing (led by Assoc. Prof. David Coyle)
and Design, Ethics and Privacy (Assist. Prof. Marguerite Barry). The
group has a highly research active community of researchers with a
collaborative research ethos, regularly publishing in leading HCI
venues. The postdoc would join the Speech Interaction theme, working
closely with Assoc. Prof. Benjamin Cowan.
==Person Specifics==
Applicants should have obtained or be close to completion of a PhD in a
relevant subject (e.g. Human–Computer Interaction, speech technology,
cognitive psychology, experimental psychology, psycholinguistics and/or
related discipline). Ideal candidates will have a strong background in
quantitative research methods and statistics/mixed methods research,
experiment design and/or conversational user interface research.
Applicants should have demonstrated potential for research excellence
(e.g., publication track record in international journals and
conferences) and a desire to publish in leading venues in their field,
whilst also demonstrating a desire to apply for/or have attained
external funding. Applicants should also have demonstrated strong self
motivation and an ability to work independently. The ideal candidate
should have a desire to collaborate across disciplines and an ability to
work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team.
