I'm puzzled as to why wire drawing has been excluded. A 3.5 mm square section hardly represents a difficult task, all the more so with cranked pulling machines as illustrated in Biringuccio. Considering how elaborate those machines were, even water driven, they were likely around for some time before. Machines of this sort would allow for smooth uniform pulls through a drawplate.
It remains that the invention of rolling mills is an interesting question.
