That’s true, but someone out there is paying maintenance on the link and equipment on a daily basis. They get to choose. The fact that they keep paying implies that there’s still value.

It’s true that inertia sometimes causes bills to be paid when they shouldn’t be, I would think we would hear a lot about this. Depeering was not exactly a hush-hush event.
