Walter Tull was born in England of mixed Barbadian and English heritage. The
first qualified mixed heritage dentist in the UK, he later went on to become
a professional footballer at Tottenham Hotspur. He enlisted in 1914 and
fought in France and Italy, including at the Battle of the Somme. He was
commissioned as an officer in 1917, one of the first mixed heritage men to
do so. He was killed in France in 1918.
