Subject: Crowdfunder for Blue Plaque for First and Last Queen of Haiti
Message sent on behalf of IBAR's Dr Nicole Willson:
Dear friends,
Together with the Haitian Chamber of Commerce, I am raising money for this important heritage project, celebrating Marie-Louise Christophe's historical presence in Britain. Marie-Louise was the FIRST and ONLY Queen of Haiti - and she lived HERE, in Britain, from 1821-1824. As a Black queen in the age of slavery, her presence in Georgian Britain was symbolically important. That presence did not go unnoticed by her contemporaries - her and her daughters' movements were widely tracked in the British press; their hobbies, interests and circle of acquaintances were spotlighted in correspondence; and auction sale ledgers and rate books serve as a material account of how they navigated life so very far away from their Haitian homeland. And yet, there is no historical marker to celebrate and commemorate Marie-Louise's important presence in Britain. Despite her vital historical significance, she was refused an English Heritage blue plaque in 2020. For this reason, we are soliciting donations for a Nubian Jak Community Trust blue plaque to be mounted at her former London residence. This is the FINAL WEEK to pledge your support. Please donate what you can, and share widely across your networks: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/queen-marie-louise-christophe-plaque#start
