This is an AHRC-funded online event organized by De Montfort University and Birmingham City University (Centre for Chinese Visual Arts).
Our conversations will explore the role of Chinese contemporary art and its precarious position at the intersection of artistic practices, curatorial vision, global politics, nation branding and state reputation management.
These issues merge most vividly every two years at the China Pavilion during the Venice Biennale, one of the most illustrious venues for contemporary art. In recent years, with Chinese contemporary art gaining attention globally and instrumentalized as a tool of soft power and cultural diplomacy, how have these curators navigated the challenges of staging “China” in an international context that is the art biennale? What curatorial values and rationalities have they adopted? How has contemporary art been mobilized to promote what kinds of national images and ideals? We hope to address these major themes, as well as other artistic and political forces at stake.
The online discussion will be hosted by Professor Jiang Jiehong of the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts and conducted in Chinese. A recorded version with English subtitle will be uploaded to our project website https://china-art-nationbranding.org/ soon following the event.
This program is a part of an AHRC-funded research and networking project “Art Diplomacy and Nation Branding: The Visual Politics of Reinventing China”.
