Do you have skills and experience in Optimisation, Simulation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and are familiar with railway operations and management? Are you interested in conducting research to bridge these disciplines?
We are looking for a highly motivated and committed individual with strong technical research skills to join the rail operations research team at the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), University of Leeds. The appointment is for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension pending mutual satisfaction and funding availability.
As part of the appointment, the applicant will play a key part in a RSSB-funded R&D project, “Assisted Very Short Term Plan (aVSTP)”, leading the Leeds strand of the project developing reinforcement learning and/or other Artificial Intelligence techniques in train timetable rescheduling, collaborating with partner institutions.
More generally, the applicant will support the research activities and development of wider rail operations research in ITS, including:
(i) conduct research activities on a broad front relating to digital train control, timetable optimisation, network simulation modelling, AI and data analytics for railway operations and traffic management;
(ii) lead and contribute to research papers for top-ranking journal publications and as project reports;
(iii) contribute to the development of future research funding applications where appropriate;
(iv) develop collaborations with colleagues in other Institutes, Schools and Faculties at the University of Leeds, and develop research links with external academic organisations;
(v) engage with railway industry stakeholders, and support research and innovation in railway operations;
(vi) develop and supervise a small number of master’s student dissertations in areas which support the overall objectives of the post.
There are also opportunities for the applicant to get involve in research student supervision, and teaching in relevant undergraduate and masters taught programs.
