Dear colleagues,
At the subject English (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Mid-Sweden University, we launched a series of seminars i.e. MIUN data sessions last month which is a forum to bring social interaction researchers together to work on work-in-progress video recorded data sets brought by guest presenters.
For our second data session, we will be visited by Ali Ghamdi from Newcastle University on 28 October, 2021 entitled
“Managing trouble in video-mediated English language classes and prioritizing progressivity”. The seminar begins at 16:00 (Sweden)/ 15:00 (UK)/ 17:00 (Turkey)
The data sessions are public and open for participation, but since in the data sessions, we work on video recorded human interaction, we would like participants to register prior to attending the seminar in order to receive the Zoom link and transcripts.
Registration form: MIUN Data session seminars on Social Interaction - Google Forms
Description about the seminar:
We will watch and discuss video recordings of the teachers’ screens while teaching English language speaking classes to small groups of learners on zoom. Teachers are based in the United States and Brazil while learners joined these classes from different countries such as Brazil, Honduras, and Saudi Arabia. In these video-mediated English language classes, participants feed their background noise which can pose a threat to the progressivity of the ongoing class activity. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we aim to unpack the methods by which participants orient to background noise and how they manage its occurrences to maintain the progressivity of the ongoing activity.
Best wishes,
Alia
