Kia ora – hello,
Registrations are open for the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand 2021 virtual conference. It will be hosted online from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand on 22-23 November.
The conference features an international line-up of keynote speakers and presenters exploring the theme of `Communities, books and the power of words.’
Keynote speakers
Dr Hirini Kaa (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu and Rongowhakaata): Historian and Anglican minister, Dr Kaa will consider how iwi engaged with Christian sacred texts through their own mātauranga, or worldview, and understood and used them through lenses such as whakapapa, whanaungatanga and tikanga.
Dr Sarah Werner: A Washington DC-based book historian and digital scholar, Dr Werner will look at how feminist theories and praxis can help our understanding of bibliographic work and offer a sketch of what feminist bibliography might be and why it matters.
Papers
Presenters will explore the intersections and dynamics between communities, books and power through a wide range of papers. They include examinations of the 1535 Servetus-edited edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, Pacific biliteracy and bilingual material, 17th century bookseller Thomas Bassett, a study of LGBTIQA+ readers of lesbian literature, and much more.
Delegates can also tour an exhibition at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum and interact and share content through the online platform.
An additional session for rare books and special collections librarians, including a roundtable discussion and lightning talks, will take place on 24 November.
