The launch of the UK’s first guide to universal credit, created by claimants for claimants, will be webcast from Belfast City Hall this Wednesday (29 September). Unveiled just in time for the end of the coronavirus jobs retention scheme, which is likely to bring a new set of people into contact with universal credit for the first time, the group behind the guide hopes it will help others avoid some of the problems they encountered when moving onto the benefit.
The UC:Us Guide to Universal Credit has been produced by some of the first people to move onto universal credit in Northern Ireland, working in partnership with researchers from the University of York and Ulster University, and social security experts from the Law Centre NI and Housing Rights NI.
At the launch event, the team behind the guide will explain why they decided it was needed and talk about the process behind its creation. We will also hear from Cllr Kate Nicholl (Lord Mayor of Belfast), Linda McAuley (On Your Behalf, BBC Radio Ulster) and Kellie Armstrong MLA (Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Communities). Although the guide has been designed in Northern Ireland, it is intended to be a valuable resource for people claiming universal credit anywhere in the UK and contains specific guidance for each of the four countries where appropriate.
The webcast will be hosted at https://vimeo.com/event/1305859, from 11.30 on Wednesday 29 September, after which the guide will be available at https://www.ucus.org.uk/. Please tweet your reactions @UCUs_Now
UC:Us’s experiences, vision and recommendations for universal credit are set out in the report on the first wave of the research, which can be found at https://www.jrf.org.uk/report/universal-credit-could-be-lifeline-northern-ireland-it-must-be-designed-people-who-use-it.
UC:Us’s work has been supported by the Economic and Social Research Council and Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
