Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Please join our La Trobe Archaeology seminar at 8:30 pm on Thursday, 9th September (Australian Eastern Standard Time [AEST]).
Log in to see Dr Paul Murtagh (Archaeology Scotland) presenting ‘Playing the Past: The archaeology of football in Scotland and its social benefits.’
Scottish football is deeply embedded in the social fabric, particularly in Glasgow, and until 1950 the city boasted the three largest football stadiums in the world.
Stadiums continue to be important for groups whose heritage has traditionally been marginalized, yet little has been done to document the development of these important facilities.
Our co-host this week is Dr Keir Strickland. (La Trobe Archaeology). Keir is a specialist in South Asian and Medieval archaeology, with research interests that include the collapse and resilience of civilizations and the archaeology of early Buddhism. Before joining La Trobe, Keir was a staff member at the University of the Highlands and the Islands at Orkney, and he is well-versed in regional Scottish sports and pastimes, including the venerable and ancient ‘ba game’ played on the island:
