Primary Research Group Inc, has published the International Survey of STEM Faculty: Use of Various Bibliometric Measures and Services, ISBN 978-1-57440-689-4
As bibliometrics becomes a critical determinant in hiring and tenure decision, this PRG report provides essential intelligence on which bibliometric measures are the most broadly used, consulted and respected. The study gives a broad range of data on many different bibliometric tools, pointing out frequency and extent of use of Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, CrossRef, Semantic Scholar, Lens.org, CiteSeerX, OpenCitations, Microsoft Academic and other tools. The study also presents data on the satisfaction level of STEM faculty with the range of bibliometric measures and services provided by their universities. Data in the report is derived from 172 scholars from 72 research universities worldwide.
Just a few of the 135-page report’s many findings are that:
• A sixth of those sampled use Web of Science monthly
• 10.37% of respondents were familiar or highly familiar with Semantic Scholar
• Dissatisfaction with university bibliometric services was greatest in engineering, computer-science and math-related disciplines.
• More than 69% of respondents have consulted Google Scholar for bibliometric data within the past year.
Data in the reports is broken out by a broad range of institutional and personal variables including global university ranking, enrollment size, public/private status, tuition level and country of location of the university of the survey respondent, as well as age, work title, tenure status, gender and annual teaching course load of the survey respondent. A roster of the institutional affiliations of the survey participants can be downloaded for free, along with a sample from the study and the table of contents.
