Hi At the Rochester Avionic Archives we only have a baby archive of some 70k photographic negatives. However, I too would be interested in learning about a  methodology to describe these as we slowly load them onto our website. Sadly the original handwritten registers are in some cases woefully unhelpful in describing the subject .

Paul I note that you have this huge archive of Shorts pictures and firstly I wonder if you have been contacted with  Barrie & Liz Walker at the 
SHORT BROTHERS COMMEMORATION SOCIETY? They visited me at the  Rochester site of BAE Systems which as you know was the Short Bros factory at one time.  I would also be interested to know if you have any pictures of the Rochester site  especially of the early days of construction of the Hangars. 
Likewise to Peter West I wonder if you too have pictures or documents about the Rochester site.
We have a small archive and collection of Shorts material but our museum is primarily to record the work of Elliott Bros through to BAE Systems at this site.
