Shakespeare and Community: Emerging Voices - Tuesday, September 7, 2021, 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. BST
Held Online. Registration:https://think.nd.edu/registration-london/
In 2021 and 2022, The University of Notre Dame London Global Gateway is curating two panel discussions under the theme of Shakespeare and Community. We will bring scholars and practitioners from a variety of cultural backgrounds and locations together to discuss how Shakespeare can be used as a tool for creating inclusivity and awareness in today’s society through innovative research projects and productions.
The first panel will be focused on work with specific groups including the incarcerated, disadvantaged children, and the deaf community. This will be held online on: Tuesday, September 7, 2021, 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. BST
The panel will be moderated by Notre Dame professor, Scott Jackson, the Mary Irene Ryan Family Executive Director. Jackson is the co-founder of the Shakespeare in Prisons Network and a firm believer in the power of Shakespeare and theatre arts to effect positive social change.
The panelists include:
Abigail Rokison-Woodall (Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham), who is working on a project concerning teaching Shakespeare to deaf children with RSC education.
Rowan MacKenzie (Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham), who is the founder of Shakespeare UnBard, and creator of Europe’s first in-prison theatre company jointly owned by her and the inmates, the highly successful Gallowfield Players of HMP Gartree.
Janice Valls-Russell and Florence March (Université Paul Valéry, Montpellier), who lead a research action program in six high schools in Montpellier on Shakespeare and citizenship, which has been included in a national framework agreement with the French Culture Ministry.
