Dear Karl,
When you say 'group', do you mean a level (A, B, C) of your
(within-subject) factor of interest or a partition of your subjects? It
would usually mean the latter but I am wondering as I don't remember you
having mentioned having multiple groups.
That said, reading between the lines, yes, I presume you indeed want to
average images from the same subject corresponding to the same
condition, if you have repetitions. You would end up doing a one sample
t-test where each input (average) image comes from a single subject.
